SUMMARY:Talk: Digging the David Parr House
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of September\, Alison Dickens and her colleague Catherine Collins from Access Cambridge Archaeology led a team of enthusiastic volunteers to excavate the back garden of the David Parr House on Gwydir Street. Fifteen small test pits were dug over three days (a total of 73 10cm spits!) and their contents sieved and washed\, revealing an incredible range of objects from late Saxon pottery to 20th century childhood memorabilia. This talk is the public sharing of what was uncovered then and has been discovered since\, looking at both the history and development of not only Gwydir Street\, but also this part of Cambridge. \nThis event takes place at the St Barnabas Centre behind St Barnabas Church\, doors open at 7pm with the talk starting at 7:30pm. Entrance is free with any donations shared between Mill Road History Society and the David Parr House. \nThe speaker\, Alison Dickens BA MCIfA\, is a Senior Manager at the Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU) and Director of Access Cambridge Archaeology (ACA). \n

SUMMARY:Talk: Mapping the Cemetery - Uncovering its Stories
DESCRIPTION:The History Group of the Friends of Mill Road Cemetery have an ambitious (possibly over ambitious?) project to photograph each of the 3000 graves in the cemetery\, to map their location as precisely as we can\, and to research the people buried there. Three members of the History Group will talk about what they’re doing; Caro Wilson will outline the valuable relationship with the Ordnance Survey\, Mary Naylor will describe the research and on-the-ground work that is necessary\, and Ian Bent will tell one of the many stories we have uncovered\, that of Isaiah Deck\, pharmacist of King’s Parade. \nThis event takes place in the St Barnabas Centre (the Old School Hall) behind St Barnabas Church on Tuesday 12th June. Doors open at 7pm\, the talk starts at 7:30pm. Tea and biscuits and a chance to talk to the speakers are provided afterwards. Admission is open to all and costs £3.

DESCRIPTION:Mill Road History Society and partners invite you to a free drop in event to mark the 70th anniversary of Indian Independence as the Deaf Centre (off Mill Road\, behind Cutlacks). \nThis event is part of Open Cambridge 2017. \nThe Deaf Centre\, which is fully accessible\, has a main and a small hall. This programme gives you estimated timings for events in each. Feel free to move between the two in a way that does not disturb performers. In the small hall\, there’s a chance to socialise\, with short films\, and a small exhibition. Between 12.30pm and 2pm sample Indian finger food specialities thanks to Amrik and Raj Lally of Lally’s News. \n10.30am – 11.15am Main Hall\nAn Indian Doctor in Mill Road\, Upendra Krishna Dutt and his remarkable family\nAt the turn of the 20th century\, 25 Mill Road was the home of Dr Dutt\, his Swedish wife\, and their children (all later prominent Communists). Venue for the Majlis Society and host to visiting Indian nationalists\, today’s Petersfield Surgery was once awash with international idealists. Join historian Jo Costin for a talk on this fascinating family. \n11.30am – 12.15pm Small Hall\nHighlights from the Archive\nKevin Greenbank\, Archivist at The Centre for South Asian Studies\, will introduce Cambridge University’s Indian collection of photographs\, letters and albums.\nThis will be accompanied by an exhibition of images from the collections about Independence\, Partition and Decolonisation. \n11.30am – 12pm Main Hall\nSanskruti Dance School\nStudents of Sanskruti School of Dance present Bharatanatyam – an ancient classical Indian dance form from the temples of Tamil Nadu.\n1) Pushpanjali (offering of flowers)\, an invocation in Raga Nattai\, Adi Tala will be performed by beginners.\n2) Alarippu (to blossom in Tisram) will be performed as a solo by Oishani Goswami.\n3) Mangalam. \nwww.sanskruti.org.uk \n12pm – 1pm Main Hall\nSitar Recital by Jonathan Mayer\nJonathan Mayer has studied sitar with Ustad Wajahat Khan\, Pandit Subroto\, Roy Chowdhury and Clem Alford. Jonathan has played with artists such as Sir Paul McCartney\, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Pandit Kumar Bose. \n1pm – 2pm Small Hall\nMalgudi Days\nMeet some of the colourful characters from this fictional South Indian City in this DVD dramatisation of episodes from RK Narayan’s Malgudi Days\, published in 1943. \n2pm – 3pm Small Hall\nBring an Object\, Tell a Story\, Ila Chandavarkar\nExplore India through treasured objects. The session will start with a group of women from the Indian Subcontinent showing key objects they brought with them when they came to Cambridge and discussing why they chose them. DESCRIPTION:Mill Road History Society’s own (local legend) Allan Brigham leads a walking tour of the Kite area. He will be accompanied by Susan Woodall who will also talk about the Women’s Refuge Centre. \nWe will meet at 6:30pm at the Fitzroy Street entrance to the Grafton Centre (outside the Co-operative Bank)\, taking a gentle walk around the area\, and ending at around 8:30pm. \nAll are welcome but places are limited so please email admin@millroadhistory.org.uk to book your place. DESCRIPTION:A demanding stranger comes to call. Send him on his way. But wait – is there more to him and his visit than meets the eye? So begins a Chekhov play which has been adapted for the Cambridge stage by award-winning local playwright Paul Crossley. This\, together with his version of another Chekhov comedy\, will form a double bill of plays re-imagined for the city – and\, specifically\, the area around Mill Road. \nIn The Proposal and The Bear theatregoers can expect references to neighbourhood shops\, cafes\, pubs and even some residents\, during an evening devoted to celebrating Mill Road’s richness and diversity\, proceeds from which will benefit the Mill Road History Society. \nWell-known local actors Les Wheeler\, Emily Redfarn and Gareth Atkinson will double up\, performing the three main characters in each of the plays. American director Michael Howley will be coming over from the United States to direct the plays. \n“We anticipate a unique occasion for performers and audiences alike”\, says dramatist Paul Crossley. “If the young Chekhov had ever visited Cambridge he would certainly have experienced the heady atmosphere of Mill Road. I have ensured that the plays have retained their characters and essential plot but I have freely adapted them to reflect this vibrant part of the city”. \nPaul adds “We have a superb cast on board\, and a talented director who knows the Cambridge scene well. Mill Road History Society and Anglia Ruskin (which runs The Drama Studio) have been wonderfully supportive. And we will have The Six Bells pub for refreshments – before\, at the interval\, and after the performance! All we need now is an audience to share the fun.” \nLucy Walker from the Mill Road History Society says “We are really pleased to support local talent\, and I know that this is going to be an entertaining evening. The idea of placing the 19th century Russian world of Chekhov in Mill Road\, Cambridge in 2017 is intriguing. I hope everyone will come and enjoy the plays. \nWe thank Anglia Ruskin University for generously allowing us to use the Drama Studio in Covent Garden. SUMMARY:Talk: Mill Road\, Barnwell\, and the history of prostitution in Victorian Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Victorian Cambridge had a flourishing prostitution economy\, one that came to centre on the working-class neighbourhood of Barnwell to the east\, extending up Newmarket Road in particular\, but taking in East Road and Mill Road. This talk considers the ‘moral geography’ of prostitution in Victorian Cambridge\, the relationship between the University authorities and prostitute women\, and the place of Mill Road’s inhabitants in this history. \nThe talk will be delivered by Dr Philip Howell of the Department of Geography at the University of Cambridge. \nThe event is in the St Barnabas Centre\, behind St Barnabas Church. DESCRIPTION:In the opening months of the First World War\, 1\,500 men from Cambridgeshire came forward to serve their country as a battalion in Kitchener’s New Army\, many from the Mill Road area. \nThey came from the city and they came from the fields. Many had never left the county before\, let alone their country\, and all too many would never return.
